Space Food
By Lucia (Grade 6)
Have you ever wondered what you could eat in space and how you could eat in space? Well, I am about to answer all of your questions.
There are some foods that you can eat in space and some that you can’t. For example, breads and cookies are strictly off limits. The crumbs could get caught in tubes and cause malfunctions.
Salt, pepper and other granular spices and seasonings can make for a huge mess in microgravity. NASA has, instead, developed liquid alternatives for astronauts to use.
The carbohydrates in soda act differently in space than on Earth. As a result the carbon dioxide bubbles remain within the liquid as opposed to being released as a gas for an effervescent pop. This can cause astronaut’s to experience digestive problems and cause discomfort. It would not be well if the astronauts took a sick day because they wouldn’t be able to control the ship. That is why Coke and Sprite stay on the ground.
How Do You Make Freeze-Dried Foods?
Freeze-dried foods are made by quick-freezing cooked items. Then they are placed in a vacuum chamber where they are heated to remove all water. Once they are sent to space, they can be reheated and eaten.
